Little Pumpkin Patrol: No tricks, only treats!

Little Pumpkin Patrol: No tricks, only treats!

The spooky season is officially upon us! While Halloween brings costumes and candy, for our little ones, it’s all about gentle fun, sensory exploration, and creating magical memories at home. Forget the frights - here are 3 super simple, sensory activities perfect for your tiny ghosts and goblins.

1. Potato Print Pumpkins (Sensory Art)

  • Why it works: Perfect for boosting coordination and creative expression in a low-mess way.
  • What you need: A potato (cut into halves with simple pumpkin/ghost shapes), washable orange, white, and black paint, and paper.

    How to play:

  1. An adult carves simple shapes into the potato halves.

  2. Let your child dip the carved potato into the paint and stamp repeatedly onto the paper.
  3. Once dry, use black paint (on a cotton swab) to add eyes and smiles to your prints. Instant, adorable decorations!

2. Monster Mash Sensory Spaghetti (Messy Play)

  • Why it works: This is a fantastic tactile experience that encourages imaginative play and sensory development.

  • What you need: Cooked, cooled spaghetti, green and orange food colouring, olive oil (to prevent stickiness), a large tub, and optional plastic spiders/eyeballs.

    How to play:
  1. Toss cooled spaghetti with food colouring and a drop of oil in sealed bags until it looks like vibrant 'monster worms'.
  2. Pour the spaghetti into the tub.
  3. Let your little one dig in! They can use hands, spoons, or tongs to practice fine motor skills while searching for hidden toys in the slimy strands. (Always supervise closely!)

3. Feed The Monster Box (Motor Skills)

  • Why it works: A fun way to practice gross motor skills (throwing) and improve hand-eye coordination.
  • What you need: A large cardboard box, markers, and "monster food" like beanbags or crumpled-up paper balls.

    How to play:
  1. Decorate your box like a friendly, hungry monster.
  2. An adult cuts a large hole for the mouth.
  3. Set the monster a short distance away and challenge your child to toss the 'monster food' into its mouth.
